The city of Rome is Italy's capital and is also the country's biggest and most populated city with a population of more than 2.7 million people. Rome is also the capital of the region of Lazio. It is located in the central western area of Italy where the Tiber river meets the Aniene river. Rome is a very cosmopolitan and modern city. It is one of the few major cities in Europe that came through the Second World War unscathed, because of this the centre of the city centre keeps its Renaissance and Baroque character. The center of Rome is listed as a World Heritage Site. Rome enjoys a climate that is typically Mediterranean, at its peak in August the temperature regularly exceeds 32 degrees and drops to around 14 degrees in mid-winter.
For more than 2,000 years Rome has been an energetic centre, these days though you are more likely to come across pavement cafes, speeding scooters, and well dressed local people in the piazzas of Rome. The enormous forum is the centrepiece of Rome as it was once the main centre of the Roman Empire. Here you will find the Temple of Saturn, the Arch of Septimus Severus, the house of the Vestals, the Arch of Titus, the Temple of Antonius and Faustina and the infamous Colosseum where gladiatorial battles used to take place. Another famous landmark in Rome is the Pantheon, this is a floating dome that rest on pediments and columns, and near this you will find the Baths of Caracalla. More modern sights are the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain; despite being more modern they are equally as photographed.
If you cross the Pont Sant' Angelo bridge you will find yourself heading towards the Castel Sant' Angelo and the Vatican; which is home to the Catholic church. In this area you will be able to see St Peter's Square and St Peters Cathedral, which is where Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine chapel can be found.
