Lyon History
Formerly called Lugdunum, Lyon is blessed with a rich Gallo Roman history, as it was the capital of the three Gauls during three centuries. This status brought political, economic, military and religious influence to Lyon. The city quickly became one of the most important centres of trade in Europe and began to captivate more and more intellectuals and artists.
Due to its crossroad location and its thriving silk industry, Lyon has attracted textile merchants and bankers from all over Europe during the Renaissance period.
