Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. It is Northern Ireland's largest city, and is the second largest city, after Dublin, on the island of Ireland. Belfast contains over 40 public parks, the most popular of these being the Botanic Gardens located in the Queens Quarter. These gardens are home to the Palm house, which is one of the earliest cast iron, curvilinear glasshouses. Other attractions in the Botanic Gardens include the rose gardens and the Tropical Ravine. The gardens also host many live events form pop concerts to live opera.
The population of Belfast is spilt evenly between its Protestant and Catholic residents. Both of these cultures have contributed to the cities culture. Despite the troubles that the city has seen artists in Belfast have continued to express themselves through music, art and poetry. Since 1998 and the Good Friday Agreement Belfast has begun a cultural, social and economic transformation that has given it an improving cultural reputation internationally.
