The city whose original name was Lucentum, meaning city of light, is located to the South East of Mainland Spain. Alicante is one of the oldest cities in Spain with its history stretching back more than 2,000 years to Roman times. As one of Spain's fastest growing cities, Alicante has a tourist based economy which comes from the coastline of Costa Blanca and also the second home industry which boomed during the 1990's. On a smaller scale Alicante's economy is supported from agricultural products such as olives, citrus and almonds.

During the day the city of Alicante is busy and pleasant, one of its main attractions being the Castillo de Santa Barbara. This is a medieval fortress, which overlooks the city; it is accessed easily through the mountains by cable car. If you wish to see parts of Alicante's history it is a must to go and see the ruins of St Ferdinand castle and also the con cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari. Another of Alicante's main attractions are the beaches, the best of these being San Juan, which is just a short trip from Alicante's centre making Car Hire Alicante a convenient way to travel. If you wish to travel further, a good day out can be found at Gavea, Altea and Calpe. Altea is home to a wonderful market, which runs along the sea front. A week after this festival on the Playa Del Postiguet there are seven nights of firework competitions. Alicante has an all year round night life aided by a huge student population, fun loving residents and a large number of tourist visiting the city. During the summer months the nightlife moves to the nearby St Johns Beach.
